Digg: RIM Working on New Touch BlackBerry/QWERTY Keyboard Combo

Posted by on under qwerty keyboard, phe, mr t, matter of time, new model, slider, blackberry, rim, launch |

We knew it was only a matter of time before we saw the first touchscreen BlackBerry with a QWERTY slider keyboard. With the Storm 2 set to be released in early October rumors of a new type of BlackBerry phone could overshadow the launch. Codenamed "Mr. T" and no that is not a typo, this new model BlackBerry is something RIM has never done before.

Engadget: Video: LG GD510 touchscreen 'Pop' is heavy on hype, light on specs

Gotta hand it to LG, they've pulled out the big hitting hyperbole with the launch of its otherwise simplistic GD510 touchscreen phone. LG begins with a reminder that it launched "the world's first full touchscreen phone" -- the Prada -- back in January 2007. A claim that Ericsson, Nokia, and others would rightfully dispute. LG then calls the brushed-aluminum GD510, or "Pop," the "most compact 3-inch full touchscreen phone ever made," while boasting of its simplicity. That latter claim was achieved by removing "unnecessary features" that apparently include burdensome WiFi and 3G radios since modern consumers want to browse the internet over GPRS/EDGE. Spec-wise, you get a WQVGA (note the "Q") display, 3 megapixel camera, 8GB of internal memory, and a single home key that glows green to call or red to hang-up / cancel. There's even an optional solar-panel battery cover which is the number one requested feature on touchscreen phones... right. It does look pretty though, which is saying a lot for a phone packing a solar. Hitting Europe in mid October and the US at the end of October if the Bluetooth SIG entry is to be believed. Video promo after the break.

Techcrunch: Closing In On Launch, Twitter Tweaks Its Retweet API And Shares A Picture

In the Twitter API Announcement Google Group today, developer Marcel Molina posted a couple interesting updates about the upcoming Retweet API. First, the launch of the new API is "close at hand." In fact, Molina notes that users may already be seeing the new style retweet/status messages from users who are currently testing out the feature. Second, and more importantly, Twitter is making a pretty significant change to the API prior to launch. Previously, Twitter was requiring third party developers to check whether a tweet has already come in or not in any users' stream to see if they should collapse it under the new retweet structure. Now, Twitter has built its own mechanism to check for those duplicate tweets into the API. This will ensure that only the first tweet is shown and the retweets go under it automatically.

This week's Escape Pod podcast story is Madeline Ashby's βoyfriend, a marvellous, sweetly romantic science fiction story about teenagers who use clever artificial intelligences as "training wheels" on the way to their first real love, but who quickly find themselves substituting the warm companionship of their imaginary friends for the confusing and fraught people around them. It's got Ashby's sly humor, heart and it's got clever to spare. I bought Madeline's first published story for Tesseracts 11 and it's wonderful to see where she's gone since. Funnyman Rich Fulcher (Twitter), whose work you may know from The Mighty Boosh (he plays "Eleanor," "Bob Fossil," and other characters), has a new book out this week. "Tiny Acts of Rebellion" contains a wide assortment of little recipes for how one might stick it to the proverbial man. To prepare for the book's launch, Mr. Fulcher is "sticking it" to a number of cities, quite literally, in a series of internet videos which feature the comedian giving the finger to all that we love and hold dear. First: Hollywood. (A special nod to Boing Boing Video editor Eric Mittleman, who shot and directed this fine piece of work, and to background dancer Ruth Waytz, whose moves are described as "Fosse-esque.").
