Make contributor Joe Grand (aka "Kingpin") shows his BSODomizer (www.bsodomizer.com) prank gadget in action. Complete plans are available or you can buy an assembled unit for $79. What is BSODomizer? BSODomizer is a small, battery-powered, mischievous electronic gadget that interfaces between a laptop or desktop and VGA monitor and flashes images onto the monitor at random time intervals or when triggered by an infrared remote control. When used to display a fake BSOD (Blue Screen of Death), the user will become confused and turn off his or her machine. Over and over again. Legitimate uses of the BSODomizer include monitor/projector/video calibration or a simple timer to remind the user to take a break from sitting in front of the computer. Various configuration settings are selected via on-board DIP switches. Created by Joe Grand (aka Kingpin) and Zoz. If you have any video or pictures of BSODomy in action, be sure to let us know and we can post things on this page or link to your site. Have fun! Welcome to BSODomizer...

Yesterday morning at GDC Austin, Blizzard's J. Allen Brack and Frank Pearce took to the stage to finally give a peek inside the inner workings of World of Warcraft. Tipping the scales at around 4,600 people utilizing 20,000 computer systems and 1.3 petabytes of storage, Blizzard has created a raging behemoth. The Online Network services group alone has "data centers from Texas to Seoul, and monitor over 13,250 server blades, 75,000 cpu cores, and 112.5 terabytes of blade RAM. [Pearce] points out the picture of the GNOC (Global Network Operations Center) in their slideshow, a data core that even has televisions tuned to the weather stations. They use those to ensure that conditions of the data center are up to their standards; with only a staff of 68 people they ensure connectivity across the globe for the numerous WoW servers."

Well, we just recently finished putting the Fitbit activity monitor
through its paces, but it looks like Philips has now come out with a strikingly similar device of its own -- which, like the Fitbit, promises to help you get more active (or stay active, as the case may be) by monitoring your daily activity. From the sound of it, however, it seems that Philip's so-called DirectLife monitor might have a few more tricks up its sleeve, not the least of which is a full-fledged fitness program that comes complete with online personal coaches (at a rate of $12.50 a month, of course). The activity monitor itself also has a few seeming advantages over the Fitbit, including some basic LED lights that show your progress at a glance, and a built-in USB plug that eschews the need for a dock. Then again, it does still make use of nothing more than a basic accelerometer to monitor your activity, which isn't always the most foolproof option. It also packs the same $99 price tag as the Fitbit, but Philips will knock that down to $79 if you order this month, and throw in a four-month membership for good measure.
