Engadget: Nokia plugs itself into the Wireless Power Consortium

The Wireless Power Consortium has already managed to attract some pretty big players in the industry (including Philips, Sanyo and Duracell), but it's now bolstered its roster with one of its biggest heavyweights yet by announcing that Nokia has signed on as a full member. Of course, Nokia isn't making any firm promises about incorporating the Consortium's Qi wireless power standard into its products just yet, but it does say that the technology "carries significant potential to enhance consumer experience of battery charging," and that it "aims to meet these consumer expectations." For its part, the Wireless Power Consortium is unsurprisingly thrilled to have Nokia on board, noting that the move "significantly expands the potential market traction of the Qi wireless charging standard."

Engadget: Philips introduces DirectLife activity monitor / fitness program

Posted by on under mitor, fitness program, promes, activity monitor, accelerometer, led lights, mth, paces, good measure, price tag, ug, philips, nbsp, gadgets, glance |

Well, we just recently finished putting the Fitbit activity monitor through its paces, but it looks like Philips has now come out with a strikingly similar device of its own -- which, like the Fitbit, promises to help you get more active (or stay active, as the case may be) by monitoring your daily activity. From the sound of it, however, it seems that Philip's so-called DirectLife monitor might have a few more tricks up its sleeve, not the least of which is a full-fledged fitness program that comes complete with online personal coaches (at a rate of $12.50 a month, of course). The activity monitor itself also has a few seeming advantages over the Fitbit, including some basic LED lights that show your progress at a glance, and a built-in USB plug that eschews the need for a dock. Then again, it does still make use of nothing more than a basic accelerometer to monitor your activity, which isn't always the most foolproof option. It also packs the same $99 price tag as the Fitbit, but Philips will knock that down to $79 if you order this month, and throw in a four-month membership for good measure.

Simple, Cost-Effective, Multiroom Audio?

Posted by on under mdash, russound, mey, living room, mp3s, amp, keyboard, philips, speakers, wireless system |

jimicus writes "I'd like a multiroom audio system but I'm thoroughly confused by the options available — and the difference in prices is huge. For instance, Philips have a wireless system which starts at around £280 — and Russound have a product which comes in around £1,000. I've already got all my music as MP3s and it lives on a NAS box — I don't really want to repeat that process. I also have a perfectly capable amp and speakers in my living room, so I don't really need anything else there. Whatever I go for has to pass the wife test — so something which requires a separate amp, speakers and PC in each room and requires a keyboard to control is right out. I don't mind spending a little money but I don't really want to find that every little extra thing adds up to £thousands. Has anyone else dealt with a similar problem? How did you solve it?"
