More Sony Batteries Recalled

Scott Hagerman passes along news of yet another recall of Sony laptop batteries. The batteries in question, manufactured in the same timeframe as those involved in the massive 2006 recall, are in laptops sold by HP, Dell, Toshiba, Lenovo, and Acer. Neither Apple nor Sony itself used these batteries in their laptops. This time 100,000 batteries are involved — 65,000 of them sold outside of the US — vs. the 10 million recalled in 2006. The Consumer Product Safety Commission fielded 19 reports of batteries overheating and/or catching fire.

23,600 Reasons to Have Your Chimney Serviced

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, reports that some 23,600 residential fires in the 50 states were related to solid fuel appliances and equipment in 1996. An additional 5,500 fires were attributed to chimneys and chimney connectors serving heating systems burning liquid and other fuels. As a result of these fires, 130 people died, 230 people were injured, and total property losses were set at more than $184.4 million.

Two Safety Recalls on Home Products

The Consumer Product Safety Commission recently issued two safety recalls that you should be aware of. The first is the Evenflo Top-of-Stairs Plus Wood Gates, a safety device to keep small children away from the stairs. In a number of instances the slats on the gates have broken, posing a falling hazard to infants and toddlers. About 150,000 units were recalled. More info can be found at Evenflo's safety website. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) added another type of Roman Shade to the list of those recalled due to strangulation hazard. A massive shade and blind recall back in November saw tens of thousands of roman shades and blinds recalled because of the choking and strangulation hazard that the cords posed for children.
